SundogandArc1.jpg (27272 bytes)I have been taking pictures of clouds all summer, searching for that one new moment. On Sunday October 23, 2005 I found myself staring at two sundogs, a halo and two types of arcs all at the same time. I knew what sundogs and halos were but had never seen these arcs before. I captured the moment and
then came home to find out what I had viewed. Sundogs are at the same elevation as the sun and 22' from the sun. The sundog is 1' across. It was 3pm in the afternoon and the sky is mine. EOS Digital Canon Rebel, S.S.1/200, ISO 100, 55mm lens. Taken at Sullivan Lake, Washington
 Suzanne Ruby - Elk, Washington
Arc2.jpg (22771 bytes)To create all this you need cirrus clouds with flat hexagonal ice crystals only a few thousandths of an inch across in width and zero degree Fahrenheit. To bring together all this four of these events the sun needs to be lower in the horizon. Because I couldn't block out the sun the halo was difficult to detect. Balancing on the halo was two Tangent arcs. The Tangent arcs exist above and below the sun. Tangent arcs originate at 22' from the sun. EOS Digital Canon Rebel, S.S.1/400, ISO 400, 18 mm lens, Exposure comp -2/3.
 Suzanne Ruby - Elk, Washington
Arc3.jpg (43608 bytes)Above the Tangent arcs is the beautiful Circumzenithal arc. It took my breath away. It was a mini upside down rainbow floating at the zenith in a sea of frosty blue. It is listed as an inverted, 1/4 circle that is facing the sun. The sun has to be between 18-26 degrees up from the horizon in order for this to occur. Taken September 11, 2005 on the 4th anniversary of the event, it shows the spectacular northern lights reflecting in an Anchorage, Alaska lake, together with the lights of the Alpenglow Star shining brightly on the mountainside. The star is actually 325 ordinary 50-watt light bulbs arranged in the shape of a huge star. Ordinarily, the star is turned on only for the Christmas season, but is now illuminated every year on the eve of 9/11 in memory of the event. I've been trying for the past four years to get a photo of the northern lights over the Alpenglow Star. Finally, this year all the elements came together. mcgee01-000751.jpg (90561 bytes)I took this photograph April 10 at the Knik River near Palmer, Alaska. This was a very intense burst that lasted approximately 10 minutes. As you can see, the approaching clouds and the nearly full moon could not hide the lights. I think the illumination of the clouds by the moon, and the reflection of the aurora in the Knik River, makes this photo especially unusual and pleasing.

bolt0714a.jpg (29662 bytes) Sunday July the 10th, a storm in Casper, WY with wonderful energy rolled in. As a weather spotter for the NWS I got up on the roof, enjoying and absorbing the energy and my husband handed me my digital camera. (We have stairs to the flat part of our roof, I know I should not have been on the roof in a lightning storm! :)  I just started snapping pictures as fast as the camera shutter would go and captured one lightning bolt. Soon after that, the hair on the back of my neck started raising and I scurried down off the roof just as fast as I could go! It was scary and fun! After a record breaking week in the high 90's, this cleansing and cooling, gully washing rainstorm was a breath of fresh air.     Peace to you all!     -- Jody   Storm2July13,2005.jpg (56460 bytes)  Storm on July 13th, 2005

00-101-27.jpg (92131 bytes)I took this photograph on the evening of December 12. Believe it or not, but this is not a trick or composite photo. Every year around the Christmas holiday, the U.S. Army lights up this huge star on the slopes of Mt. Gordon Lyon, a 4,100 foot high mountain 10 miles east of downtown Anchorage, Alaska. The star is made up of 325 ordinary 50 watt light bulbs, is a couple hundred feet across, and it can be seen from nearly everywhere in Anchorage. On this particular night, there was a layer of low clouds over town, but they were thin enough that the star stood out brightly above them. The unusual color is due to sodium vapor street lights illuminating the clouds from below.  See more photos by:  Scott McGee   scan0007.jpg (30780 bytes) Taken on The Beach at Florence , Oregon, on a very cold February afternoon. mcgee01-9850.jpg (38462 bytes)Here's a photo that I think is perfect for the Christmas season. I took it
on November 27, 2004 from a lake near my home in Anchorage, Alaska. It shows the nearly full Moon rising over the Chugach Mountains and the star on Mount Gordon Lyon. The star is made up of 325 ordinary 50-watt light.....  -->
mcgee01-9850detail.jpg (53744 bytes) ...bulbs strung up on 10-foot high poles to keep it from being buried by snow. The star is several hundred feet across, and it can be seen from nearly everywhere in Anchorage.
I've also included a second photo that is a close-up crop of the overall photo. It clearly shows the star and the moonlight shining on the frozen surface of the lake.
