This photo is a memorial to the World Trade Center attack on September 11,
2001. Taken September 11, 2005 on the 4th anniversary of the event, it shows
the spectacular northern lights reflecting in an Anchorage, Alaska lake,
together with the lights of the Alpenglow Star shining brightly on the
mountainside. The star is actually 325 ordinary 50-watt light bulbs arranged
in the shape of a huge star. Ordinarily, the star is turned on only for the Christmas season, but is now illuminated every year on the eve of
9/11 in memory of the event. I've been trying for the past four years to get a photo of the northern
lights over the Alpenglow Star. Finally, this year all the elements came
together. Camera: Canon EOS 1Ds Mark II, digital SLR Exposure: 1.9 seconds at f/2.8, ISO 800, 25mm focal length e-mal to: or see more photos by: Scott McGee - Anchorage, Alaska |

I took this photograph April 10 at the Knik River near Palmer, Alaska. This was a very intense burst that lasted approximately 10 minutes. Oct 24, 2002, I actually observed a 120' parhelia, or mock sun, located on the parhelic circle. A rare sight and a first for me. Sun dogs are quite common, now that I look for them every chance I get! The 120' parhelia was also observed again Oct. 30! They are faint white spots and hard to photograph. They can be located easier if the parhelic is present. See more photos by William Biscorner | On Oct. 24, 2002, I observed my first parhelic circle, though incomplete. Every year around the Christmas holiday, the U.S. Army lights up this huge star on the slopes of Mt. Gordon Lyon, a 4,100 foot high mountain 10 miles east of downtown Anchorage, Alaska. The star is made up of 325 ordinary 50 watt light bulbs, is a couple hundred feet across, and it can be seen from nearly everywhere in Anchorage. On this particular night, there was a layer of low clouds over town, but they were thin enough that the star stood out brightly above them. The unusual color is due to sodium vapor street lights illuminating the clouds from below. See more photos by: Scott McGee |

Here's a photo that I think is perfect for the Christmas season. I took it on November 27, 2004 from a lake near my home in Anchorage, Alaska. It shows the nearly full Moon rising over the Chugach Mountains and the star on Mount Gordon Lyon. Believe it or not, but this is not a trick or composite photo. Every year around the Christmas holiday, the U.S. Army lights up this huge star on the slopes of Mt. Gordon Lyon, a 4,100 foot high mountain 10 miles east of downtown Anchorage, Alaska.
