Aurora090302.jpg (28814 bytes)Here is one of several photos taken of the Sept 3rd aurora that caught almost everyone by surprise. I was trying to photograph the distant glow of the Oregon wildfire near Westfir when the aurora began capture my peripheral vision. I soon lost interest in trying to spot the distant glowing hillsides and spent the next hour shooting the unexpected fire in the sky. I used Provia 400F at F 2.0 with a Nikor 35mm wide angle F1.4 lens. Exposure time was about 15 seconds. Film was push processed 1.5 stops.      John Flinn aurore7sept235mm.JPG (16858 bytes)  Aurora on September 3rd. 2002. Taken with a Pentax ME Super with a 15 mm lens. Film was Fuji color 1600 asa. Tornado Cloud 10-1-02 r1, n3.jpg (34124 bytes)The aurora was split by a long cloud that ran for north to south. Probably a contrail gone a rye. This made for an interesting photo shoot. What a night. vortex aurora.jpg (23720 bytes)Taken in Alaska on  October 31st, 1991. This light vortex probably followed the ion trail of a atmosphere grazing meteor and went horizon to horizon in a tight spiral. Note the belt of Orion in the trees. It was taken with a 20mm Nikor lens, 20 second exposure at F 2.8 using Kodachrome 200 film pushed two stops. There was virtually no movement of this band of light for over 1 minute, then it opened slowly to a flame like form.    John Flinn.
FlameAurora2b.jpg (49053 bytes)This is a photo that is a sequel to the "light vortex" photo sent earlier. It was taken 2 minutes later using a 20mm Nikor @ F 2.8, 20 second exposure on Kodachrome 200 slide film pushed 2 stops during the night of October 31st, 1991. Notice the constellations of Auriga, Taurus and Perseus. This band of light crossed the entire sky in line with the Milky Way. It really looks like a flame at this stage of its development. It went on to expand and cover the entire sky with diffuse bands of light.   John Flinn.

4-19-02 -15a.jpg (41911 bytes) Sometime the aurora has to compete with a half moon and clouds.  I could see the vibrating action of the sky being dazzled by the magnetic field and it was subtle and pulsating for left to right or up and down.  The wind had discovered the many scattered popcorn clouds and was moving them on there way.  The speed of the clouds made for white steaks mixed in with the greens and reds of the aurora.  I could not see the color, only the vibrating sky.  Taken with Pentex 1000, Fuji 400, 2.8 mm for 7 seconds.    Suzanne Ruby   Elk, Washington 4-19-02 -12.jpg (37507 bytes) For two days the wind had been blowing from 30 - 50 miles per hour, all day and night. Lara_110701a.jpg (37368 bytes) I took a chance I might see the "leftover" Aurora away from the city lights. Could see the pillars of light in the moonlit sky. The camera picked out the colors for me! Pentax K1000; 800ASA, Kodak film; 50mm lens; f/2, 30 second exposure.  Nov. 7, 2001.

orionsbelt.jpg (250383 bytes)Anza-Borrego State Park, Blair Valley. 12-15-01  I tried out a Nikon D1 digital camera to do some astrophotography of Orion's Belt and it was great seeing instant results and determining how long I can go without trails occurring. It's also nice to know how the special effects are going, then carry over those results to the film camera. I still think film is the way to go foremost astro photos. The digital cameras are very battery dependent and the digital gives off a weird "noise" in shadow areas. I would very much like to use the digital camera for a fair portion of my night work. Any suggestions for night photography with the D1 are welcome.

00-111-09.jpg (100130 bytes)Many people claim that witnessing the northern lights is a spiritual experience for them. I guess it's true, as this "spirit" seems to be enjoying the aurora shimmering over Denali! I took this photo on January 18, 2003 from an overlook between Anchorage and Fairbanks, Alaska. Although the lights were not very intense, the full moon provided enough illumination to make this look almost like a daytime shot.    See more photos by:   Scott McGee
