Here is one of several photos taken of the Sept 3rd aurora that caught almost everyone by surprise. I was trying to photograph the distant glow of the Oregon wildfire near Westfir when the aurora began capture my peripheral vision. I soon lost interest in trying to spot the distant glowing hillsides and spent the next hour shooting the unexpected fire in the sky. I used Provia 400F at F 2.0 with a Nikor 35mm wide angle F1.4 lens. Exposure time was about 15 seconds. Film was push processed 1.5 stops. John Flinn |

Sometime the aurora has to compete with a half moon and clouds. I could see the vibrating action of the sky being dazzled by the magnetic field and it was subtle and pulsating for left to right or up and down. The wind had discovered the many scattered popcorn clouds and was moving them on there way. The speed of the clouds made for white steaks mixed in with the greens and reds of the aurora. I could not see the color, only the vibrating sky. Taken with Pentex 1000, Fuji 400, 2.8 mm for 7 seconds. Suzanne Ruby Elk, Washington |
For two days the wind had been blowing from 30 - 50 miles per hour, all day and night. This night the wind was staying above the trees. Sometimes I take pictures even if there is not much color in the sky because you just never know what will show up on the film. Its always a surprise.

One thing that I've noticed is that the clouds are really unusual during a geomagnetic storm. Here is a sample of an "Orthographic cloud" taken during a robust geomagnetic storm on June 17th, 2000 from the Mt. Jefferson Wilderness in Oregon. It looks like a face blowing up a storm. John Flinn | This is of the Conjunction of Venus and Jupiter on August 5th, 2001 during a relatively full moon. The mountains in the foreground are the Three Sisters in Oregon. There are also lenticular clouds over the Sisters. Sailplane pilots can "surf" these clouds to attain heights over 35,000'. After sunrise, hundreds of hummingbirds came out to taste the wild Rhododendrons. John Flinn |

This image was taken on one of those extremely rare northwest winter days that was actually clear! It was taken by Bill Cotten in December 99 . Nearly two dozen sunspots are clearly visible. The image was shot through a University Optics 80mm f/6.25 refractor using an Olympus OM-1 SLR loaded with Kodak Gold 200 ASA film. The telescope was fitted with a filter made from Baader AstroSolar Safety Film. | I shot that picture using my Palm and the $99 PalmPix. Its a bad picture of the moon, but one giant leap for a Palm handheld (with apologies to Neil Armstrong) Considering how these technologies are improving, taking snapshots through the telescope may become surprisingly common place! 12-15-01 I tried out a Nikon D1 digital camera to do some astrophotography of Orion's Belt and it was great seeing
instant results and determining how long I can go without trails occurring.
It's also nice to know how the special effects are going, then carry over those results to the film camera. I still think film is the way to go
foremost astro photos. The digital cameras are very battery dependent and the
digital gives off a weird "noise" in shadow areas. I would very much like
to use the digital camera for a fair portion of my night work. Any suggestions for night photography with the D1 are welcome. Joe Klein, San Diego, Ca. e-mail to :jkphotog@hotmail.com |
